Mei is in Nederland het seizoen waarin de nationale vlag danst met tulpen. Het rood, wit en blauw van de driekleur dragen de spirituele code uit die van generatie op generatie wordt doorgegeven – rood symboliseert onverschrokken moed, wit staat voor puur geloof en blauw is net zo inclusief als de Noordzee. De tulpenasbakken die overal in de straten van Amsterdam te zien zijn, interpreteren dit nationale karakter op een unieke manier. Deze transparante containers van weggegooid glas hebben geëtste tulpenpatronen op het oppervlak, waardoor de gebruiksvoorwerpen die oorspronkelijk as droegen, worden gesublimeerd tot kunstinstallaties. Elke keer dat de as valt, is het alsof er een nieuw levensgedicht op de glazen bloemblaadjes wordt geschreven – die verbrande tabak, net als de frustratie en ontberingen die het leven moet doorstaan, zal uiteindelijk in de doorzichtige container bezinken tot voedingsstoffen. Nederlandse ambachtslieden gebruiken zo’n ontwerp om te verklaren: ware moed is niet het vermijden van brandende pijn, maar het temperen van brandende pijn tot de kracht van bloei. Net zoals de Nederlanders vierhonderd jaar geleden polders onder de zeespiegel drooglegden en met wijsheid zout-alkaliland omvormden tot tulpenvelden. Tegenwoordig herinneren deze glazen vaten gevuld met gloeiende kooltjes iedereen die langskomt eraan: het mooiste rood van het leven bloeit vaak op de aarde die verbrand is. Wanneer we in moeilijke situaties een geloof zo puur als een witte streep behouden en de wind en regen accepteren met een hart zo groot als de blauwe oceaan, zullen we uiteindelijk wachten tot de nieuwe knoppen die uit de as ontluiken, uitgroeien tot opwindende rode bloemblaadjes onder de zon.

The tulip ashtrays that can be seen everywhere on the streets of Amsterdam are interpreting this national character in a unique way. Dutch craftsmen use such a design to declare: true courage is not to avoid burning pain, but to temper burning pain into the power of blooming. Just as the Dutch reclaimed polder below sea level four hundred years ago and used wisdom to turn saline-alkali land into tulip fields. Today, these glass vessels filled with embers are also reminding everyone who stops by: the most beautiful red of life often blooms on the soil that has experienced burning. When we maintain a faith as pure as a white stripe in difficult situations, and accept the wind and rain with a heart as big as the blue ocean, we will eventually wait for the new buds that emerge from the ashes to bloom into thrilling red petals under the sun.
